5 Warning Signs Your Brakes Need Attention

Your brakes give you plenty of warning before they fail. Here's what to listen and feel for.

Brakes are your most critical safety system. Here are five signs they need service:

1. Squealing or squeaking — Most brake pads have a small metal tab that makes noise when the pad is worn to about 20% remaining. This is your early warning.

2. Grinding — Metal-on-metal contact. Your pads are gone and you're damaging your rotors. Get in immediately.

3. Vibration when braking — Usually warped rotors. The pulsing feeling through the pedal is a tell-tale sign.

4. Pulling to one side — A stuck caliper or uneven wear can cause your car to pull when you brake. This affects steering control.

5. Soft or spongy pedal — Air in the brake lines or a failing master cylinder. This is serious and needs immediate attention.

If you notice any of these, call us. Brake repairs caught early are almost always significantly less expensive than waiting.
